MRFC 30:0 StuSta

Großhadern, 24 October 2009, AMoughty

MRFC continued their winning streak, with a convincing win over StuSta, and for the first time got their hands on the ‘MOB Derby Cup’, sponsored by the Munich old boy.

MRFC received the kick, and went straight into attack mode, and after 3 near misses and good defense from the Students,  Alan Moughty crossed the line, just left of the posts for the first try of the afternoon with just 3mins on the clock. Thomas Hensel kicked the extras ( 7 -0 ).

After the restart Munich continued to apply all the pressure and dictate the flow of the game.  Some good runs from both wingers, ensued that Munich played the game in the StuSta’s half, but then on 15minute mark Munich then lost both their wingers:

Florian Fenske ( damaged shoulder ) and Thomas Hensel ( dead leg ).  Only replacing 1 of the players, Munich played some 7-8minutes with 14 men.  Eventually after it was realized,  Munich was restored to it full contention of 15 men.

With MRFC winning the physicality battle at the break down, StuSta never got any go forward ball at all to work with.  The battle of the front-rows was unrelenting for the first 40mins, with StuSta playing the ref and the laws very well, forcing Munich into losing 4 scrums.  Parity though was retrieved in the linouts with Munich stealing 60% of the Students ball and winning 100% of their own throw.

Then just before half-time Munich striked once again, with Man of the Match Fionn Harnischfeger crossing the line and Xavier Mora adding the conversion.  (14 – 0 ) .

At the break, team manager ( Helmut Kraiger )  pointed out where Munich need to clean up, the main area been the scrum and not take our foot off the pedal or fall asleep.

Both points were taken in by all the players and applied in full. From the restart, the ball bounced into touch, giving StuSta a lineout. Where Maxime Miget got his fingers to the ball and forced the turnover,  with ball spread out wide,  Henry Nagel broke the gain once again,  striding towards the try line, but was stopped just short with some good cover defense.  Were he to off load Munich good have been in for their 3rd try,  but instead they had to settle for a penalty in front of post for hands in the ruck.  Xavier Mora kicked the penalty leaving it (17 – 0) after 45mins.

With Quentin Degroote work done, he was replaced by Michl Abt in the frontrow in the 50minute, which only added to StuSta a problem in the scrum in the 2nd half where Munich turned the stats around to win 100% of their own ball and over 60% of StuSta’s ball.

As the game entered into the last quarter, it was the difference of fitness that was starting the show,  and with another penalty given for slowing the ball down,  Mora converted (20 -0 ) and still 20minutes to play.

But it was not until the last 7 minutes of the games, the Munich got on their way to the 4 try bonus point.  Another penalty just 5m away from the Students try line,  a quick tap penalty caught the Students napping and Moughty was in again for Munich 3rd try.

Munich rang the changes then, with Moughty, Briggs & Loders called off.

Its was then in the last minute of the game,  Munich scrum pushed the Students off their ball,  and with a wonderful pick up by Robbi, and two players to beat,  he covered the 50meters to score the 4th try in the corner. End score 30 -0 for MRFC

A big win for Munich and its setups a perfect ending for the first half of the season, with the final game in two weeks against Stuttgart RC.

It should be a great game if it lives up to the expectations of both teams. The strongest attack against the strongest defense…..
